Constant and chronic stress can have a negative impact on your health and quality of life. Symptoms such as headaches, digestive problems, insomnia, and other problems can result from uncontrolled stress.
Mindfulness techniques for stress
In my practice, I have found mindfulness meditation to be effective in treating both physical and mental health conditions. When practicing mindfulness, we learn to purposefully focus our attention. Placing our attention in the present moment reduces the effects of mental health challenges in our minds and bodies. As a result, immediate and long term benefits are felt both emotionally and physically.
Who is mindfulness for?
Clinical studies reviewed by the Mayo Clinic have found that mindfulness and relaxation techniques are effective for a range of physical and emotional issues. You may benefit from mindfulness if you’re experiencing:
- stress
- anxiety/depression
- insomnia
- pain
- high blood pressure
- and more
Traditional meditation for stress
Traditional meditation is also helpful to reduce stress and its effects. Researchers in neuroscience understand that diaphragmatic breathing has immediate and powerful effects on the autonomic nervous system. When we stop and take slow, deep breaths, it activates our vagus nerve which lowers the fight-or-flight response and allows us to relax.
Progressive muscle relaxation is also effective in reducing stress and insomnia. Many people are learning these techniques in order to reduce stress, get better sleep, and live a more productive quality of life.
Mindfulness techniques, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation are beneficial for children, adolescents, and adults.
